It is true that Social Media caught on with younger generations quickly, but my personal opinion has always been that this would change rapidly. I have been witnessing it happen bit by bit, the facebook friend request from my parent’s friends, the emails coming from my personal blog, and the new twitter followers. Which is why when Steve Rubel of the MICRO PERSUASION blog posted an article entitled “Social Networking Demographics: Boomers Jump In, Gen Y Plateaus” this earlier this week I was immediately intrigued.
Steve states in his article that according to a recent survey done by Accenture, Baby Boomers account for the fastest growing users of Social Media and Blogs. In fact, while growth amongst Generation Y has pretty much leveled off (1%) Boomers are growing at a rate of 20%. In blogs alone, growth was over 67% year over year.
The Impact on Associations
The obvious impact on Associations is that if you had put off creating a blog in the past because you felt the approach did not match your core group of members, that concern is no longer relevant. With such a high percentage of growth happening there is a huge opportunity for your association to put a blog in place now and capture these new users early on before they come to demand it from you.
